As a member of these committees and a former business owner, Mr. Miller brings real-world experience to address the transportation, water and housing needs of the 42nd district. In addition, he is working to reduce the United States' debt, create a fairer tax system, improve access to healthcare, ensure students receive a quality education, and stop the flow of illegal immigrants into our country. Mr. Miller is chairman of the Building a Better America Caucus, a congressional organization promoting quality growth. He is also a member of the Republican leadership team as assistant whip. Mr. Miller was born in Arkansas, but grew up in Whittier, California. In his early twenties, he founded the G. Miller Development Company and met his wife, Cathy. They married in 1972 and raised three sons and one daughter. As his family grew, so did his business. G. Miller Development expanded from building single family and custom homes to eventually developing planned communities. In 1982, Mr. Miller was asked to serve on the board of directors of Sonrise Christian School. His service to the community was expanded in 1988 when he was appointed to the Diamond Bar Municipal Advisory Council. Upon the incorporation of the City of Diamond Bar in 1989, Gary Miller was elected to its first city council and served as Mayor in 1992. On May 16, 1995, Mr. Miller was elected to the California State Assembly. There he served as chairman of the Budget Committee and the Banking and Finance Committee, as well as vice chairman of the Transportation Committee. His distinguished California State Assembly career is highlighted by 24 bills signed into law, successfully negotiating funding of the first class size reduction program, and a balanced budget that reduced the business tax rate to 1973 levels while maintaining a $310 million reserve. Mr. Miller currently resides in the city of Diamond Bar.

Welcome to tvlesson I'm your host James Gomez and today we are going to learn a little something about what congressmen do. Our guest today is congressman Gary Miller. Gary Miller welcome to tvlesson.com Tell me how did you get started in congress? I served at a school board for eight years. I was a member of the municipal advisory committee. What gave you that passion to first of all want to run for office of city council of diamond bar? I didn't like the direction the government was going. I believe in less government and more local control. I was on the first city council of diamond bar. In the long run what I did was very beneficial and has kept the cost down and we originally determining the direction the city will go. What made you originally want to run for congressman? I was serving on the city and I had the honor of being the first republican budget chairman and then the option became available to run for congress and I thought it would be a good fit and I challenged the incumbent republican and won. I am most proud that the people I represent trust me. I come home every weekend like I told you, I attend Cavalry Chapel Diamond Bar and we have about fifteen thousand members. Ralph Reese's church. Yea Ralph Reese's church. People come all the time, they tell me what they think, they tell me whats important to them. I think that the most rewarding part of this job is the ability to help people. I call my staff bureaucrat busters. People come in with alll these issues from immigration to social security to budgeting. The most rewarding part is actually being able to help people and some of the thank you notes and cards, when you realize how much good you can do and it just outweighs the legislation and all that stuff which hopefully the things we do help out individuals. What can we expect out of Gary Miller and congress in the next couple of years. I'm going to do anything I can to represent the people who elect me. Some people think that bringing money back home to your district is bad. The way I look at it, you guys pay taxes so I'm going to bring as much money home as I can to help you. If we can cut spending in Washington, I'm going to vote for every one of those cuts. I'm going to fight to get as much money back home as I can. Every time you have a relationship between a congressman and city councils that cant call every time they want to theres a problem. When they have a need I try to do everything I can to help. Ive had all of you call and say we need help in this area and it would be very beneficial can you help us? And if I can I try to help you. To me its something that is absolutely necessary. In La Habra we certainly appreciate your help in the district. How would Gary miller like to be remembered? Somebody who really cared. Thank you Gary Miller.
