Here Mark talks about how you can use word of mouth to market your music. The band Dispatch used high school and prep school students to market them by playing at their schools. When those kids moved on to college, they talked to all their friends about Dispatch and that led to Dispatch blowing up in popularity.

Im going to ask you about your next section that i think is very interesting and this knowledge i think comes from you getting out there and meeting different musicians and bands and learning how they built their careers. And you talked about playing at hubs. And i knew you also know this through tour managing Tyrone and seeing his career build by the places you chose to play it. So can we talk about that? Yea so a prime example for this would be probably, there's a band called Dispatch and they were an independent band that started playing at high schools and prep schools all up in the north east and colleges, and they were playing these places that are hubs because they have people living together. You know in prep schools a lot of the kids actually live there or they are in class every day together or colleges. And its just like somebody got a cold and walked into a dorm there's a good chance that that cold is going to spread. People are so connected. And you could be the good virus right? If you come in and you’re an artist that all of a sudden kinda creates emotion at some little college, people will connect and it will spread. So it kind of creates, it makes the force of your efforts stronger because it is going to hit one patch of people instead of one patch in LA and another patch here and another patch here you can hit a really connected patch of people that will then spread the music for you. So this band Dispatch did that. All these high school kids went off too college all around the country, Napster hit just at that time, they had one song, it was really big on Napster called the General. They had no radio promotion, they had no albums in stores, no record label and these guys just exploded. But a lot of it came from all these seeds they planted at these schools, these sixteen, seventeen year old kids in prep school and those kids went to college, and started talking to everyone about it. High schools, colleges, fraternities, sororities, i have this friend who is doing a six month sorority tour and he just totally hustles it, he calls sororities, he comes in, they have him play acoustic, and then they love him so they will call the other chapters. Hey where are you going? Oh I'm going to Texas next week. So they will call the kappa kappa gamma house in Texas and say you have got to have this guy is he is great. Thats like ultimate connectivity because they are all webbed all over the country. |
