The rebound of the drum head is like a basket ball court. Basketball players do not put the ball on the floor and then pick it back up. That is too much work and wont get much done. Just like that concept, the stick is the ball and you must harness the rebound in order to optimize your drum heads. Let the sticks do all the work. Mark Chipello joins TVLesson and explains the concept and help you become a better drummer.
Transcription Much like a basket ball, if you’re trying to dribble down the court, you would place the ball on the ground and you would never get the ball down to the court and you’ll get called for travelling. A lot of drummers do that and they play stiff. Let me the drum do most of the work. I’m going to show you what it looks like when I don’t inhibit the rebound. That’s me hitting the drum and getting it out of the way. If you play stiff you’re doing twice as much work. One of the concepts my teacher taught me is to understand this concept of rebound just like a basketball player bounces a basket ball it lets it hits the ground and comes back up. The key to this is to relax, letting the drum head and drumsticks work together. The most important concept is the grip and letting the drum do the work itself.
