In MMA, movement has to be controlled and quick. Any mistakes in footwork can lead to a take down, or something worse like a knockout. It is important to learn the footwork, and to practice it.
Moving Forward and Backwards Step 1: Get into your striking stance. Step 2: To move backwards you want to push yourself back with your front foot, but dont hop. You want to glide backwards. Step 3: To move forwards you want to push yourself forwards with your back foot and make sure not to hop again. Step 4: As you get familiar you can start stepping further and further until you are comfortable.
