Most dogs that are kept as pets are harmless as long as they are treated the right way. Although mostly harmless, children should still be informed on how to deal with dogs the correct way, to avoid any dangerous accidents from happening.
1. Teach children how to treat dogs and other pets the correct way, and inform them that they have to respect the boundaries that the dogs have for themselves.
2. Give examples to children of the things they do that can be annoying or threatening to dogs, resulting in aggressive behaviour from them.
3. Tell children to always have their palms facing upwards when approaching unfamiliar dogs for the first time; they should let the dog sniff their hands first, before proceeding to actually petting it.
4. Teach children not to disturb dogs who are sleeping, or who are eating or taking care of their puppies.
5. Children shouldn’t approach strange dogs that are kept in cages or restrained.
6. Teach children never to run from a dog. What they can do is to stand very still with their arms on their sides, avoiding eye contact with the dog.
