Pregnancy entails a lot of preparation, even more so when it involves twins. Multiple births are more common nowadays, and it’s best to prepare for pregnancy specifically for more than one child inside the womb.
1. Get an ultrasound as early as possible in the pregnancy, to determine what kind of care you would need during your pregnancy.
2. With twins instead of one child inside the womb, a soon to be mother needs to consume about 600 extra calories to make sure that her babies get the right amount of nutrients they need.
3. Keep in mind that with a single child inside, a pregnant woman is expected to gain about 25-35 pound throughout the pregnancy. With twins, she is expected to gain around 35-45 pounds.
4. The amount of iron and folic acid the expectant mother needs will also be increased if she is carrying twins, as compared to a single child pregnancy.
5. As early as possible, be aware of the risks that come with more than one child during pregnancy. There is a higher risk for premature delivery, preeclampsia, gestational diabetes (temporary diabetes during pregnancy) and growth restrictions (the baby/babies not growing well). Knowing the risks early on will help expectant mothers prepare more thoroughly on how to have a healthy pregnancy.
6. Consult your physician about the risks involved and what to do to prevent or how to best deal with them. Ask him to check if your twins share the same placenta or have separate ones, as this is a major consideration on having a healthy and safe pregnancy involving twins.
7. Pregnant women carrying twins are more likely to feel nauseous than those who carry only one baby inside them, so twin-carrying women should be prepared for dealing with this as early as possible.
8. In addition, those who carry twins will have a more rapid weight gain; during the second and third trimesters, expectant mothers will feel tired even faster. Knowing this in advance might better prepare the women on how to deal with the changes in their body.
9. There is a risk of one of the babies not growing properly inside the mother’s womb because of crowding; it is therefore important for the expectant mother to have periodic ultrasounds just to make sure that both babies are growing in the best possible way.
