When a woman gets pregnant, one of the first instincts is to eat a lot more than she usually does. Although this may be beneficial in some ways (a pregnant woman is, after all, eating for two now), the quality of food intake is more important than the quantity involved.
1. During the first trimester, pregnant woman shouldnât think about increasing their food intake by a lot.
2. On the second and third trimesters of the pregnancy, the future mother should increase her calorie intake. However, the emphasis should be on high-calorie food items that are also good sources of nutrients, not the ones that just provide empty calories.
3. Foods rich in folate should be an important part of the pregnant womanâs diet. Although this nutrient can be provided by nutritional supplements, itâs also good to have it from the food items consumed.
4. Zinc-rich foods should also be increased; this is easy to achieve as in general, food items rich in folate are also high in zinc.
5. Loading up on food and drink items rich in calcium will be best for pregnant woman as well.
