It may be true that all dogs go to Heaven, but that doesn’t mean you don’t want to keep them around as long as possible. Sometimes busy schedules and responsibilities can preoccupy our minds and make us forget that Man’s Best Friend isn’t going to be around forever. Follow these simple tips to keep your canine cuddle-buddy’s tail wagging well into the future.
Instructions
Step
1
Regular check-ups.
This is especially important when your dog is considered a senior. Keep in mind that “senior” status varies for different breeds, so make sure to ask your vet when your dog is considered a golden oldie.
Step
2
Look for Signs of Illness.
Be very observant; dogs tend to hide their illnesses until it’s too late. Signs of illness include change of extreme weight loss, loss of muscle mass, difficulty breathing, changes in appetite, changes in bowel movements or urination patterns, vomiting, diarrhea, or masses/lumps in the skin. If your pet experiences ANY of these symptoms, take him or her to your vet immediately.
Step
3
Diet and Nutrition.
Diet dog food is important, but make sure it’s a low-fat, high-fiber food. Try Iams or Hill’s Science Diet. Keep treats to a minimum, and make sure to buy the diet kind. Discuss diet specifics with your vet, such as how often and how much food to give your pet. Make sure you follow the regimen exactly. Don’t give your dog people-food; just avoid looking at those begging eyes!
Step
4
Exercise.
Take your dog for regular walks. Not only does it strengthen their muscles and keep their minds stimulated, but it can do the same for you too! Regular walks could add years to both of your lives.
Step
5
TLC.
Dogs need more than just healthy hearts; they need happy ones too. Don’t forget to play with them, hug them, and give them praise whenever you can. Dogs are very loving creatures, but they need love too. A simple pat on the head can make your best friend’s day. It doesn’t take much to make a dog happy, and they will return the favor by being the most loyal companion you could ever ask for.
