Meal plan should be based on patient's usual eating habits and lifestyle and should provide all essential food constituents. Goals are to achieve and maintain ideal weight , meet energy needs, prevent wide daily fluctuations in blood glucose levels and decrease lipid levels, if elevated.

Step 1
Plan the diet with glucose control as the primary goal. Learn how to check which food converts largely to glucose when digested. Take into consideration the patient's lifestyle, cultural background, activity level and food preferences. If the patient is constantly on the go packed meals are okay but make sure that they are not glucose rich food. |

Step 2
Encourage patient to eat full meals and snacks as per diabetic diet. Holding out on eating may result to heavy snacks or frequent snacking, which will cause surge or decline of blood glucose level. Ask them to eat extra snacks before increased physical activity to avoid a sudden decline in blood glucose level. |

Step 3
Remind them to be mindful of what they eat outside the home. That's where the problem usually starts, if need be have them bring along a list of food in the diabetic diet. |

Most diabetics have difficulty sticking to the diet when they are in a fast food restaurant. Help them find suitable dining places beforehand. Find a list of restaurants in the area that serve meals suitable for diabetics. |

Make your own version of lasagna or tiramisu, substitute glucose rich ingredients with something acceptable to a diabetics diet. Since they have to eat portioned meals to help keep the glucose blood level consistent, you can show your love by preparing special dishes for them that are tasty, appealing and diabetic friendly. |
